Beyond Books: Hidden Gems of Your Local Library

Your Local Library

Celebrating National Library Week

It’s National Library Week so let’s celebrate the invaluable contributions of libraries and librarians across the United States. These community hubs serve as gateways to knowledge, creativity, and connection. Local libraries have a treasure trove of great stuff; here’s how you can actively support this vital institution.

Borrowing and returning materials is at the core of library services. Whether you seek books or looking to go beyond books for music, movies, or ebooks (hello Libby and Hoopla app!) your library ensures equitable access to its collection.  Even with all those options there’s so much more you can do at the library; they go above and beyond and are the heart of the community.

The Heart of the Community

Offering more than just books, I frequently visit the Leander library (and Cedar Park Library!) for their other resources. Here are a few of my favorite non-book related reasons for visiting my local library:

Educational Programs and Resources (Free!)

Most libraries offer a wealth of educational materials, from physical books to digital resources. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a lifelong learner, your library provides free access to knowledge. Plus, my local library organize workshops, classes, and seminars for free! From financial literacy, technology, or gardening there is something for everyone to empower them to grow and thrive,

Safe Spaces for All

Libraries are inclusive havens where everyone is welcome. It’s a place to study, read, work remotely or simply find solace. Libraries truly foster a sense of belonging and community.

Programs and Events

From storytime for kids to book clubs for adults, libraries host a variety of engaging programs. Attend author talks, movie nights, and craft sessions. These events not only entertain but also connect you with fellow book lovers and lifelong learners.

Ways to Support Your Library and Librarians

Now that you know everything the library has to offer, here’s how you can support and actively contribute to your local library.

  • Become a Friend of the Library: Join a Friends of the Library group which is made up of volunteers who organize book sales, events, and newsletters. Your membership supports all the library initiatives.

  • Attend Programs and Events: Register and participate in library programs; my personal favorites are the books clubs and adult craft workshops. Attending these events encourages their continuation, demonstrates community engagement, and you’ll gain a few new book loving friends.

  • Meet the Library Staff: Thank a librarian the next time you're in the library. From shelving books, to giving book recommendations, and running programs they do so much for the community. They’re passionate about serving you.

National Library Week celebrates the gift of libraries—their adventures, opportunities, and unwavering commitment to knowledge. Ready, set, library! Let’s unlock new worlds together. Remember, libraries are more than buildings; they’re gateways to imagination, learning, and community. Support your local library—it’s an investment in a brighter future for all
