Gattica meets Dune in The Fourth Portal by J. A. Merkel, an epic fantasy series rooted in the seven chakras. With outstanding world building, Merkel takes you on Fenri the Knowledger’s journey to solve the mystery of who opened the fourth portal but ultimately finds the truth buried in secrets and lies. .

As a lover of fantasy and science fiction, I loved this book’s mix of magic, science and pure creativity. Merkel was truly creative in writing this story; keeping elements similar to Earth but adding a little some special to take you beyond what you would imagine. True to fantasy, epic fight scenes are abound throughout the book which kept my attention and were a nice change of pace for the story. With so much creativity, I was so happy there was a glossary to keep track of ALL THE THINGS in the new world, which I referenced quite often while reading.

With multiple POV’s, this book easily hooked me with its easy medium pace and lot of plot twists. I got the opportunity to follow not only Fenri’s personal growth but also Pau, Craeya, Stone, and Luzon’s personal journey of self-realization, tragedy and triumph. Every character was written well and with such depth I felt I personally knew them in real life. It didn’t take long me for to get clued into each character’s growth as they move through their journey; there’s a reason why the chapter titles are written the way they are. I found Fenri easy to fall in love with, especially her sincerity and urgency to learn all she could, a constant quest for knowledge that could not be satisfied. I had so much empathy for her when she found out the truth and how much it broke her to know how she had been used and all that she had lost. But alas, it is only fitting that she continues the quest to right wrongs and expose the truth.

If you love books with multiple point of views, strong female leads, and action packed stories that are out of this world I highly recommend The Fourth Portal by J.A. Merkel.
